Braceface Chronicles: Siri hates Invisalign

Mr. T and I enjoy asking Siri strange questions
like: “Where can I hide a body?” She pulls
up local options like swamps, bogs, warehouses.

Click. Ding, ding.

Me: “Siri, set my alarm for 6:30 a.m.”

Siri: “Who would you like me to send the message to?”

Me: “NO! I said set my alarm!”

Click. Ding, ding.

Me: “Set my alarm for 6:30 a.m.”

Siri: “Who would you like me to send the message to?”

Me: “NO!”

Click. Ding, ding.

Me, exasperated: “Set my alarm for 6:30 a.m.”

Truth. Asking Siri to tell you a bedtime story is funny when she’ll play along.

Siri: “Who would you like me to send the message to?”

Me: “F%*#$*”

Siri: “Such language, Shawna.”

Me: Giggle.

T: Giggle.

Me: “Siri, set my alarm for 6:30 a.m.”

(T: “F*#$&%”)

I find Siri particularly helpful in the kitchen for
quick conversions.

Siri: “If I could, I would blush.”

Me: “Teeee-ummmm!”

Click. Ding, ding.

Me: “Siri. Set. My. Uh-alarm. For. Six. Thir-ty. To-mor-row.”

Without question, the Siri feature on the Iphone 5 is useful. Typically, the commands “Siri set my alarm” or “Remind me to pick up bread” or “Call mom, mobile” result in quick, helpful action. But sometimes, Siri just doesn’t get it.

Background noise decreases her efficiency (or his, depending on what language you’re using). Unclear questions or directions bring up the default “Would you like me to search the web?” And Invisalign retainers’ sometimes sibilant S sounds screw her up.

By far, I have the most trouble with Siri in the evening when wearing my trays. One time I asked her to set an alarm, and she ended up dialing a former student’s phone number late at night! (Thank you, Iphone 5 for integrating a zillion Facebook acquaintance phone numbers for me. Errrr…) I find that over-enunciating helps a bit, but I am waiting for her to tell me that she’s not deaf or stupid. (ha!)
