Anna’s Cinco de Mayo Tree

At the end of 2020, I decided to keep the Christmas tree up until pandemic lockdown ends, decorating for each new holiday. (Holiday trees make great zoom backgrounds, ya’ll.)

I already had plans for the big holidays–Valentine’s, St. Patty’s, Easter, Halloween, National Donut Day–but asked my Twitter friends for suggestions to fill in the rest. I fully admit, when my dear friend and former student requested a Cinco de Mayo tree, I felt REAL nervous. The last thing I wanted to do is be a Karen creating a cultural appropriation tree.

And so, with care and consultation, I crafted this beauty, celebrating some of the colorful spirit and joy of Mexico, and of course, my friend Anna. And I found out, it’s her birthday today, too. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ANNA!

It’s not often that students stay in touch and become friends, and I’m so grateful to have Anna in my life, even from afar.

And now, behold: Anna’s Cinco de Mayo birthday tree!

My  only regret is not finding decorations that represent the cuisine. (Although stay tuned, my quest is not over!)

xoxo,
